THE ELEVENTH STEP

For this week I needed a break from the cluttered interfaces of MAYA and started some work in Substance Painter. My first job will be create a wood texture the benefit of Painter is the creation of "Smart Materials" that can not only be used on the door but also various other wood elements around the entire shop.

As with every other step of my process this began with the collection of various reference images of aged painted wood doors:

PureRef: Painted Wooden Door Board

With a variety of ages/weathered levels most of the doors have a couple aspects in common. The paint around the edges of panelling is thinner and thus worn more. Another key element of these doors is the paint being more chipped and damaged at the bottom, mostly due to wet/weather. This is particularly evident with the top right door suggesting people often open it with their foot/ can clearly see where hands have also worn away the paint, little elements like this will help sell realism and adds believable character.

After taking my models into Substance painter I began layering up various base textures using a long list of masks and generators. Most notably a raw wood with edge-ware to create the aforementioned wearing around the panels This was also applied using a masked ground wear layer to ensure it would only apply to a limited part of the door and not be too overwhelming/ uniform. Finally using a occlusion mask to ensure the whole texture looks cohesive.

SubstancePainter: Painted Door and Stone Window Texture

Once the door was created I moved onto the window, this followed a similar process of layering up materials. I do however feel this doesn't read entirely as stone and is a overall a bit too noisy in some places (mostly the top arch) but areas like the main wall bricks have no clear surface definition/ indicators and reads as a bland grunge mask over a flat grey.

KEY INFORMATION from the week:

The Smart wood texture created in Substance here I will export and take forward to be used in any other areas like Trim Sheets that will need a painted wood.

The Stone texture however will need some further work to ensure it reads as stone.
